Chapter Ten
âBreakfast seems like years ago,â I said once we left the Sowersâ neighborhood.
âIâm assuming that means youâre ready for lunch?â Jack asked. âThat chicken salad place is up here. We can drive through.â
âI want the kind with the little grapes in it,â I said. âNia Sowers was lying about not knowing Kirby.â
âYeah, I picked up on that,â Jack said, getting in the drive-thru line. âThe question is why.â
âMost obvious reason would be that sheâs scared of him,â I said. âIf heâs the one who has control over her legal status or papers maybe sheâs afraid what heâll do to her, especially now that Sowers is dead.â I paused to look at the long line. âGood grief. Who knew chicken salad was so popular.â
âItâs the new boba tea,â Jack said. âAll the fads fade at some point.â
âI just donât understand why people want chewy balls in their tea,â I said. âI donât drink things just so I can chew. It makes no sense.â
Jack grinned and tapped his fingers on the wheel. I amused him.
The phone rang and Jack hit a button on the steering wheel to answer. âWhatâs up, Cole?â
âThought youâd want to know weâve got a visual of Bobby Pickering,â Cole said. âWe got a hit back after we put his picture on the news as a person of interest. Heâs eating lunch bold as you please at Heart Attack Burgers in King George.â
âWeâre two minutes away,â Jack said, pulling out of the line and heading back on the highway. âWhatâs your feel? You think heâs oblivious?â
âNo, I think heâs meeting someone,â Cole said. âHe keeps glancing at the door and he hasnât ordered yet. Seems impatient. I was waiting to see if anyone else showed up before we moved on him.â
âYour call,â Jack said. âWhatâs your twenty?â
âIâm across the street at the coffee shop,â Cole said. âHeâs in clear view. Martinez is in the alley behind the restaurant and Iâve got plainclothes guys on each end of the street.â
âIâm circling behind the coffee shop,â Jack said. âI donât want him to see my unit.â
Jack parked by a dumpster, and we got out of the Tahoe quickly, using the back entrance of the coffee shop closest to the bathrooms.
âGood timing,â Cole said as we came up to the bistro table he was occupying in the corner.
Cole had been right. Bobby Pickering was in his direct line of sight, but the angle made it so Pickering couldnât see us unless he turned his head a little more.
âAny sign of who heâs meeting?â Jack asked.
âNot yet,â Cole said.
âWait a sec,â Jack said, nodding toward the opposite corner. âThat guy look familiar?â
Cole shook his head, but then I remembered Cole had already left for the night when we interviewed the valets.
âOh,â I said. âThatâs the kid from last night. Darnell?â
âBingo,â Jack said. âWhat do you want to bet thatâs who Pickering is waiting for?â
Cole brought a walkie-talkie to his mouth and said, âPlank, youâve got a potential suspect coming from behind you. Black jacket and gray beanie.
